Maria Cefalà is a pianist, scholar and interpreter of the repertoire of Johann Sebastian Bach.
She trained in Milan, her hometown, graduating in piano as a private student with top marks. She subsequently obtained a master’s degree in Musicology with a final score of 110, presenting a thesis on the problems of piano interpretation in the baroque repertoire. For this reason, for over ten years she has been a piano teacher on behalf of the main musical institutions in Milan, teaching in various entity and academies.
She perfected her skills with various internationally renowned pianists, including K. Bogino, C. Rosen, R. Risaliti. After three years away from the keyboard due to an inflammation of the ulnar nerve, she was admitted to the “Conservatorio della Svizzera Italiana” in Lugano, where she completed her studies under the guidance of the world-famous pianist Anna Kravtchenko, already winner of the F. Busoni piano prize at just sixteen years old. With Kravtchenko, Cefalà decided to specialize solely in the Bach repertoire, and completed the first study cycle dedicated to the keyboard Partitas, which she performed in full in her recitals.
From this moment on, her career as a pianist and scholar experienced an unexpected rise: in 2018 her personal project, Discovering Bach, was born, which debuted in some of the main Milanese theaters and in a tour of five Italian prisons, a project conceived by Cefalà and Arnoldo Mosca Mondadori. Her interpretations are reported by National and foreign media, in which Cefalà’s lyrical vein is particularly underlined.

Si forma a Milano, sua città natale, laureandosi in pianoforte in qualità di privatista col massimo dei voti. Ottiene, successivamente, una laurea magistrale in Musicologia con votazione finale di 110, presentando una tesi sui problemi dell’intepretazione pianistica nel repertorio barocco. A ragione di ciò, per oltre dieci anni è docente di pianoforte per conto delle principali istituzioni musicali milanesi, insegnando in svariati istituti e accademie.
Si perfeziona presso vari pianisti di fama internazionale, tra cui K. Bogino, C. Rosen, R. Risaliti. Dopo tre anni di lontananza dalla tastiera a causa di un’infiammazione al nervo ulnare, viene ammessa presso il Conservatorio della Svizzera italiana di Lugano, dove porta a termine il percorso di perfezionamento sotto la guida della pianista di fama mondiale Anna Kravtchenko, già vincitrice a soli sedici anni del premio pianistico F. Busoni. Con Kravtchenko, Cefalà decide di specializzarsi unicamente nel repertorio bachiano, e porta a termine il primo ciclo di studio dedicato alle Partite per tastiera, che esegue integralmente nei suoi recital.
Da questo momento in avanti, il suo percorso di pianista e studiosa vive un’inaspettata ascesa: nel 2018 nasce il suo personale progetto, Discovering Bach, che debutta in alcuni tra i principali teatri milanesi e in un tour di cinque carceri italiane, progetto ideato da Cefalà e Arnoldo Mosca Mondadori. Le sue interpretazioni vengono raccontate dai media nazionali ed esteri, in cui viene sottolineata la particolare vena lirica di Cefalà.
Il suo viene definito un Bach “all’italiana”.
L’album d’esordio, Discovering Bach, viene prodotto nel 2022 da Paolo Fresu, che inaugura con lei la sezione Classica della propria etichetta discografica, la Tuk Music Label. Il disco raggiunge il primo posto nelle classifiche di vendita nella sezione Classica – Amazon Italia, mantenendo il suo primato per mesi.
Del 2023 è il suo primo libro, Farcitura eccessiva di un tacchino e sue conseguenze, edito da Arcana edizioni, un racconto ironico della storia personale della musicista, teso a smontare i clichè del mondo della musica classica.
Nel 2024 esce il suo secondo libro, Canzoni per il mio utero, per Bach e per l’opposto al mio Zenit, edito da Il ramo e la foglia edizioni. Maria Cefalà è stata raccontata dalle principali testate giornalistiche, radiofoniche e televisioni nazionali.
Oggi è considerata una delle figure emergenti più interessanti in Italia nell’interpretazione del repertorio bachiano..
Her is defined as an “Italian-style” Bach.
The debut album, Discovering Bach, was produced in 2022 by Paolo Fresu, who inaugurated with her the Classical section of his own record label, the Tŭk Music Label. The album reached the first place in the sales charts in the Classical section – Amazon Italy, maintaining its primacy for months.
Her first book, Farcitura eccessiva di un tacchino e sue conseguenze, published by Arcana Edizioni, was published in 2023: an ironic tale of the musician’s personal history, aimed at dismantling the clichés of the world of classical music.
In 2024 her second book, Canzoni per il mio utero, per Bach e per l’opposto al mio Zenit, was published by Il ramo e la foglia edizioni. Maria Cefalà has been featured in the main National newspapers, radios and televisions.
Today she is considered one of the most interesting emerging figures in Italy in the interpretation of the Bach repertoire.
